GU80LIB   Celebrating 80 years of Liberation

Liberation Day is the national day of Guernsey the second largest of the Channel Islands and a
Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom.

It commemorates the liberation by British Forces of the Channel Islands on 9 May 1945, which
marked the end of the islands’ occupation since 30 June 1940, by Nazi Germany during World War II.

Guernsey’s Liberation Day is held on the 9th May each year. It is a joyful and significant event for the
islanders, and is a vibrant celebration filled with colourful parades, live music, and community gatherings.

The day honours the spirit of the people who endured hardships during the occupation and celebrates their
regained freedom from German Occupation and creates a festive atmosphere which everyone enjoys.

The Guernsey Amateur Radio Society will be operating the special event radio station callsign
GU80LIB in celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Guernsey on the 9, 10 and 11
May.
